In early summer of 2006 our founding members, and veteran
firefighters, Jim Morrow and Greg Lehman, began discussing the
possibility of learning to play the bagpipes. Jim had been
introduced to Keith Jeffers, an accomplished piper from
Evansville. The three of them had an initial meeting at which
they discussed what it took to learn the instrument and start a
band. They asked Keith to teach them and be a part of the band.
He accepted, and by October they had purchased practice chanters
and held their first practice.
In addition to countless hours of practice, the next year was
spent raising money through donations and fundraisers,
establishing rules and by-laws, picking out instruments and
uniforms, and deciding on the direction the corps should take.
By summer of 2007 our original three members were
fully outfitted and playing at events. We now have 6 fully outfitted
pipers and 1 fully outfitted drummer which have performed as far
away as Indianapolis with several more in the
process of learning either the pipes or drums. To improve our
playing skills, we support our member in attending classes at
"Grand Father Mountain" in North Carolina.
Our mission is to honor the original American Firefighter,
those who have gone before us and those who have paid the
ultimate price. We will instill in our current and future ranks
a new sense of honor and tradition. We will accomplish this by
playing traditional Irish, Scottish and American tunes at the
events, services and funerals of active and retired
firefighters, police officers and veterans.
We are well on our way to achieving our goal of
becoming a full pipe and drum corps that
will forever be a part of the traditions of Evansville's
Bravest, and in the hearts of the citizens of our community.
